Ishmael is the firstborn son of Abraham. His mother is Hager, Abraham's Egyptian slave and concubine. When Ishmael is a young boy, his mother and he are sent away by Abraham. He almost dies in the desert from heat and dehydration, but God saves him. Ishmael becomes a powerful tribal leader. Together with his brother Isaac, Ishmael buries his father at an old age.
