625. The difference between looking and seeing - a fun science experiment

Use this science experiment to teach about the Bible story of Joseph explaining the dreams

The baker, the cupbearer, and the Pharaoh have their dreams in their sleep, but they don’t see the meaning of the dream. God gives Joseph the insight to understand the meaning of the dream. As ordinary people we are sometimes not very good at really seeing and understanding things. We look but don’t see. This experiment is a good example of this.

The difference between looking and seeing

What do you need:

- a pack of cards
- pen and paper

What do you do:

Lay out the following combination of cards on the table.

 cards1

Ask a child to choose one of the cards and write the name of the card on a piece of paper. Ask them then to turn over the paper so that no one (and especially you) can’t see which of the five cards they chose. Then remove all five cards from the table.

Tell the children about the story you’re going to tell, about the baker, the cupbearer and the Pharaoh who all watch their dreams but don’t see the meaning of them. God gives to Joseph the insight to understand the meaning of the dreams.

Is there a difference between looking and seeing?

Put the following four cards on the table.

Cards2

Ask the child who chose a card at the start to turn over the paper on which they wrote which card it was. Lo and behold, their card has vanished!

It’s all about looking and seeing.

The baker, the cupbearer and the Pharaoh watch/look at their dreams in their sleep, but Joseph needs Gods help to see the true meaning.

With this experiment you also need to look very carefully.

Which of the original five cards are the same as these four cards that are now on the table?

They are all different! Not a single card is the same as the first five.
This is why the card that the child chose will always have disappeared.

But how come we don’t see this?

The cards look so similar to each other that we don’t remember properly which cards we have seen. We look, but don’t see properly.
With God’s help Joseph learns to see the meaning of the dreams.

You can repeat this ‘trick/experiment’ so that the children learn how to do it at home.

624. YouTube Video and Discussion – Nobody Nose Cleopatra

Using this secular YouTube film you can talk with the children about the Bible story of Joseph becoming a ruler of Egypt

Cleopatra rules over Egypt. There’s just one problem – she is not happy about her nose. She wants someone to paint a portrait of her, but each time that someone paints a good likeness of her nose they get into big trouble! One painter sends his servant to Cleopatra with the latest portrait, but on the way the painting gets damaged. The servant tries to repair it, and ends up with a portrait that is more like a Picasso. Cleopatra thinks it is wonderful, and the servant in turns becomes a painter with his own servant.

Nobody Nose Cleopatra The Egyptian Piramids Use this secular YouTube video to talk about the Bible story of Joseph becoming a ruler in Egypt

So what makes this film suitable for a discussion on the story of Joseph?

The film is about the power and fickleness of the rulers of Egypt. Farao and Cleopatra were the most powerful people in Egypt. They could make and break people, throw people into prison, kill them, or appoint them as viceroy or portrait painter. Sometimes in our world it seems as though powerful people, companies and governments can do anything they want. Which role does God play in the background?

Important questions:

It’s important to always watch the film yourself beforehand and to ask yourself:
- do I want to show this to the children?
- does this film work in the context and age-range of the children I am working with?

4. The Magi’s (a Christmas story)

magiThis is a great story about the journey of the three Magi from the East, which can either be told or enacted. It starts in Babel, the centre of all wise men. This story is not about any wise men though, it is about three very special wise men that knew a lot about astrology. They could link the placement and run of the starts in the sky with events happening in the world. This was something that the God of the Jews had forbidden. Quite ironic if you think about it…

You can download the complete script through this link

5. A Christmas tree full of prayers

christmas tree prayerA creative prayer idea to motivate children and adults to pray using a Christmas theme. Usually the Christmas tree plays no role in the Christmas story, but we will use this tree 'to carry' our prayers.

7. The painting of the son

sonA touching story that can be easily linked to the Christmas story - "Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. The man who took the son gets everything!"

8. Joseph’s good example

Discover this fun object lesson that you can easily use for Christmas.

11. Tell the Christmas story in a new way using a very easy magic trick

arrow boardWhat is the big story behind Christmas? Why did Jesus come? How do you explain this to children and adults in a Christmas service or in school assembly? You know, you can do this very easily with the Arrow Board magic trick. It is a board with two arrows. It looks spectacular, but is very easy to do. 613. YouTube Video and Discussion – The Egyptian Pyramids

Using this secular YouTube film you can talk with the children about the Bible story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife

During a dig, an archaeologist discovers an ancient remote control. When he presses it, the pyramid rises out of the ground, and a staircase appears. Excitedly he climbs the stairs and enters the pyramid. In the meantime his camel starts to chew on the remote control, which causes everything to go wrong. Eventually the archaeologist is shot back out of the pyramid.
How does this film go with today’s story?

The Egyptian Piramids Use this secular YouTube video to talk about the Bible story of Joseph and the wife of Potiphar

So what makes this film suitable for a discussion on the story of Joseph?

This funny video shows what happens to Joseph. Joseph arrives in Egypt. He becomes the number one slave, and everything seems to be going well. But just as the archaeologist is ‘betrayed’ by his camel, Joseph is betrayed by Potifar’s wife. The archaeologist gets shot out of the pyramid; Joseph gets pulled deeper and deeper into the dungeons. Joseph discovers that in his life someone else has got hold of the remote control, and that he absolutely can’t get a grip on what’s happening in his life.

Use this introductory activity to teach about the Bible story of Joseph in the well and being sold as a slave.

Today we’re going to hear the story of Joseph, whose brothers threw him into a pit, and later sold him as a slave. The brothers tell their father Jacob that Joseph had been savaged by a wild animal. This isn’t true, but this is the lie that they have to keep up. That’s pretty hard! How do they make sure that the lie doesn’t fall to the ground, and Jacob discovers the truth?

This idea is suitable for as the children are arriving, before your programme has actually started.
