Experiment - OT: Abram (5) and a pregnant Hagar - Rainbow of God's names

An easy to do experiment on the Bible story of Hagar who runs away from Sarai

In this experiment, using just seven glasses, food colouring, kitchen paper and water,  we will discover how the names of God in the Bible are like a rainbow, with each name having its own colours that, when combined, form a beautiful picture of who God is. In this experiment we create a rainbow and learn more about the names of God.

This activity is part of a complete Sunday school lesson on the Bible story in Genesis 16: 1-16 of Hagar running away from the bullying Sarai and being found by God.

What you need:

  • seven plastic cups
  • kitchen paper
  • food colouring in the colours blue, yellow and red

Let's start...

Activity

Just as Hagar discovered two beautiful names of God: He is El Roi, or the God Who sees me. And God is Ishmael, or the God Who listens to me. In the Old Testament we can discover many other names of God, just like Hagar did. Each name says something beautiful about who God is. The names of God are actually like a rainbow. Each name has its own colours and together they form a very beautiful picture of our God.

Tell:
Hagar discovers two beautiful names of God in this Bible story. He is El Roi, or the God Who sees me. And God is Ishmael, or the God Who listens to me. In the Old Testament we can discover many other names of God, just like Hagar did.

Ask:
Who knows some of the names of God?

Tell:
Each name says something different about who God is. The names of God are actually like a rainbow. Each name has its own colours and together they form a very beautiful picture of our God.

Do:
At the beginning of the lesson, place seven plastic cups next to each other.
Fill the first cup on the left half full with red water, leave one cup empty and fill the third cup half full with blue water.
Leave the fourth cup empty, and fill the fifth cup half full with yellow water.
Leave the sixth cup empty, and fill the seventh one half full with red water.
Fold six pieces of kitchen paper several times to make strips, fold them and place it like a bridges connecting the cups to each other.
You will see that within a short space of time, the first empty cup turns purple. The second empty cup becomes green and the third empty cup becomes orange.

By the end of the lesson, you will have made a rainbow.

Conclusion:

By seeing how the colours mix together in this experiment, we can imagine how the different names of God in the Bible come together to form a beautiful picture of who He is. Just like a rainbow, each name is unique and important in its own way. Let's continue to learn and discover more about God and His many names.
