What you need:

  • several coats from the coat rack, belonging to people in the church
  • a large cardboard box

Let's start...

Instructions

Come forward with a cardboard box and an armful of coats. Tell everyone in the church that you're excited to start the donation drive for poor people today. You've already brought the cardboard box.

Show the box.

Explain that it seems like a good idea to start with coats. Many poor people need a nice, warm, rainproof coat. How great that we as a community are willing to provide our coats for this. Explain that you've taken the liberty of taking some nice coats from the coat rack and donating them already.

Show the first coat (this coat belongs to a friendly person in the church who you've already asked for permission, and who is playing along with the game.)

Ask: Whose coat is this?

If that person stands up or raises their hand, ask: Do you have another coat at home? If that person says 'yes', say: Great, then you can spare this one.

Repeat this a few times, until someone asks what you're doing. You can't just give away someone's coat like that, can you?

Make the connection to today's Bible story in which John the Baptist tells the people: "If you have two shirts, give one to someone who has none."
