Stephen was a Christian deacon in the early church and is recognized as the first Christian martyr. He was chosen by the apostles to help serve the needs of the growing Christian community in Jerusalem. Stephen was known for his wisdom and was accused of speaking blasphemy against Moses and God. He defended himself by giving a powerful speech on the history of Israel and how it led to Jesus Christ. However, he was stoned to death by a group of Jews who disagreed with him, becoming the first martyr of the Christian faith. Stephen's story is recorded in the Book of Acts in the New Testament.
