635. YouTube Video and Discussion – Caminandes 1

Using this secular YouTube film you can talk with the children about the Bible story of Joseph meeting his brothers in Egypt

A lama tries to cross a road in the desert. But every time he puts a foot on the road, traffic rushes by. He just can’t get to the other side. Then an armadillo comes along, and it crosses the road with no problems at all. The lama doesn’t know what to do – but eventually he crosses the road riding on the armadillo’s back.

Caminandes 1 Use this secular YouTube video to talk about the Bible story of Joseph meeting his brothers again in Egypt

So what makes this film suitable for a discussion on the story of Joseph seeing his brothers again?

The brothers go on a journey in order to buy food, but everything goes wrong. Other people are allowed to buy food, but they are accused of being spies, put into prison, have to leave one brother behind, get accused of stealing, and have to fetch their youngest brother. If it was up to their father, Jacob, they would never go back, but they have no choice – the famine forces them to go back to Egypt a second time.

Important questions:

It’s important to always watch the film yourself beforehand and to ask yourself:
- do I want to show this to the children?
- does this film work in the context and age-range of the children I am working with?

If you choose to show this YouTube video, we suggest you use the following steps:

Step 1 – Grandmother’s footsteps (5 minutes)

Someone is the grandma (or grandpa) who stands at the far end of the room, with their back turned to the rest of the group. The rest of the group stands at the opposite end of the room in a line. The idea is that they have to cross the room by sneaking up on grandma. But at any point, the grandma can turn around. when they do, everyone has to freeze!
Anyone seen moving by grandma is either 'out' or sent back to the beginning again.
