Three funerals and a wedding - a sketchboard story about Ruth
But - one day there was bad news: Elimelech got very sick and died. How do you think they would have felt? Yes, very sad. Very, very sad. Not long after, Mahlon and Chilion died too! How awful! Poor Naomi. Poor Orpah. Poor Ruth. Soon they didn't have much money left. They wouldn't be able to buy enough food to eat. They wouldn't have enough to live on. Naomi was a very sensible old lady. She said to the girls "My dears, we are in a bad way. I am not able to look after you any more. I think the best thing to do would be for you each to go back home to your own family, who can look after you, and I will make my way back to Bethlehem and see if anyone there will help me..."
Orpah and Ruth looked at one another. How could they desert this kind old lady? In the end Orpah decided she would go home..... but Ruth said “Don't even ask me to leave you. Wherever you go, I will go. Your people will be my people. Your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Nothing but death can separate us. I will go with you and look after you always".
