Bible story: ‘Where was Jesus born?’ - in a stable or a house

Was Jesus really born in a stable or in something else?

"Mary and Joseph would have travelled to Bethlehem some time before the birth of the baby in order to comply with the Roman census.  If their baby were born in their home town, he would be exempt from 50% of the poll tax until the age of 12 - an attractive incentive for any simple family.  Probably before September when various important Jewish feasts take place.

Luke 2 says "While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born".  They were not arriving with Mary already in labour and being turned away at every door - that is out of the question!  The duty of hospitality and care for the traveller was paramount in that society - in fact it still is, across the region.  As members of the Royal family of King David they would have gone to relatives.  Elizabeth and Zechariah would surely have welcomed them, if nobody else, bearing in mind Elizabeth's reaction to Mary's visit early in her pregnancy..."
