Object lesson - OT: Joseph (3) meets Potiphar’s wife - A reflecting mirror
Can the children use a mirror to reflect the sun?
In this creative activity, we'll invite children to consider the dynamics of Joseph and Potiphar's relationship, and to think about the qualities and traits that they admire in others.
This activity is part of a comprehensive Sunday school lesson on Joseph's encounter with Potiphar's wife in Genesis 39.

Introduction
This thought-provoking activity is designed to help children reflect on the complex relationship between Joseph and Potiphar in the Bible story. While Joseph is just an ordinary slave in Potiphar's household, there is more to their relationship than meets the eye.
Through careful reading of the Bible story, we see that Potiphar recognizes the Lord's presence and guidance in Joseph's life, and that Joseph serves as a kind of mirror for Potiphar, reflecting back to him the qualities and virtues that he himself values.
In this creative activity, we'll invite children to consider the dynamics of Joseph and Potiphar's relationship, and to think about the qualities and traits that they admire in others.
Preparations
Download the mirror worksheet and print and cut out a mirror for each child.
Ask the children
Who has ever used a mirror to reflect the sun?
How does it work?
How bright can you let it shine?
We can reflect God just like Joseph
Imagine, you are walking in the mountains. The sun is shining very brightly, and you want to send a message to people far away down in the valley. Do you need a very large mirror because it is a long way away?
No, you only need a small mirror. But how does it work then?
The brightness of the reflected light has nothing to do with the size of the mirror, but with the power of the light source!
Joseph is also a sort of mirror. Everything he is and does reflects God in Potifar’s household. And Potifar sees this! He sees something of God in who Joseph is. This is how Joseph is like a mirror.
Do you know what’s so great? We can also be mirrors of God.
If you are a mirror of God, what would you like to show or reflect of God?
Ask the children to write, draw or paint in the mirror what they would like to reflect of God.
