Children's moment - OT: Abram (5) and a pregnant Hagar - El Roi: The God who sees

I spy ... a fun children's moment using a magnifying glass to illustrate the Bible story of Hagar who runs away from Sarai

During her flight, Hagar discovered a new name for God: El Roi, which means "The God Who Sees." This story teaches us that God sees us all the time, wherever we are.

This activity is part of a complete Sunday school lesson on the Bible story in Genesis 16: 1-16 of Hagar running away from the bullying Sarai and being found by God.

What you need:

  • magnifying glass or microscope
  • small objects such as coins, leaves, or flowers

Let's start...

Instructions

To start, we will play a game called "I spy with my little eye." Have any of you ever played this game before? Sometimes you can see things that others can't see. I have a magnifying glass or microscope here that we can use to see things up close. I will show you something through the magnifying glass or microscope that you cannot see with the naked eye.

Do:
Take out the small objects and show them to the children through the magnifying glass or microscope.

Tell:
Just as we can use a magnifying glass or microscope to see things up close, we can also see God in our lives if we pay attention. In the Bible story we will learn today, a woman named Hagar was on the run and felt alone. But God saw her and spoke to her. He gave her the name El Roi, which means "The God Who Sees."

Ask:
Who knows what the name El Roi means?

Tell:
That's right, El Roi means "The God Who Sees." This name teaches us that God sees us and is always with us, even in difficult times. We can trust that He is watching over us and taking care of us.

Do:
Each child who wants can look through a magnifying glass or microscope and look at small objects such as coins, leaves, or flowers. Encourage them to explore and discover the small details of each object through the magnifying glass or microscope.

Conclusion

The "El Roi - The God Who Sees" activity is a fun and interactive way for children to learn about God's constant presence in their lives. By playing "I spy with my little eye" and using a magnifying glass or microscope, children can understand the concept of seeing things up close. This activity can also help children develop a deeper understanding of God's character and how He sees us all the time.
