Using a Grass Head to count the hairs on our head

In Matthew 10: 29 - 31 and in Luke 12: 6-7 Jesus talks about the hairs on our head being numbered by God: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.…"

337. Teach children about baptism through the use of a Grass Head

What is the connection between a Grass Head and a baptism? 

That's a good question! In some churches children are baptised when they are infants. In other churches youngsters and adults are baptisted by immersion as a sign of their faith. You can use this idea for both kinds of baptism services.

Explain the meaning of baptism

In this object lesson it all comes down to immersing a Grass Head into a big jug of water. Once you have done this for a few minutes and you place the Grass Head on top of a small vase of water in a few weeks time grass will grow on its head. 

Explain the meaning of baptism in the case of an infant baptism service

In the case of an infant baptism you talk about the child being immersed in God's love and in God's family. To demonstrate this you immerse the Grass Head in a jug of water. Then you show a Grass Head that started growing four weeks ago and which now has lots of grass on its head. Talk about being part of God's family and growing up in God's family. Being part of God's love and growing into knowing and demonstrating God's love. 

Explain the meaning of baptism in the case of an adult baptism service

In the case of an adult baptism you talk about this person laying down his/her old life and coming up from the water to demonstrate the new life in Christ. To demonstrate this you immerse the Grass Head in a jug of water. Then you show a Grass Head that started growing four weeks ago and which now has lots of grass on its head. Talk about how today is just the beginning. Baptism is not the end of spiritual growth. It is the beginning of God doing a new work in the life of the person that is being baptised. As a demonstration of this new life you can show the Grass Head with lots of grass!

336. How can we teach the power of prayer in our kids ministry?

Teaching children the power of prayer through the use of a Grass Head

As a child I struggled with sitting still during long prayers in church. When the adults finished their prayer with the word 'amen', I sighed a silent sigh of relief.

For lots of children 'amen' means: this is the end of the boring bit. Now we can get on with the fun stuff again!

Isn't it a shame that talking with an almighty and loving Father who listens and answers our prayers, has become something that is boring? How can we teach children within our Sunday school lesson or kids ministry the power of prayer in a fresh and visual way?

335. The Holy Spirit is like the wind


Teaching your Sunday school class about the Holy Spirit

Ask the children in your Sunday school lesson: "Who saw any rain on the way to church this morning?" To illustrate the rain, bring a watering can filled with water, pour it out into a bucket and let the children hold their hands under it.

Next, ask the children who saw the sun on their way to church. To illustrate the sun, bring a heat lamp with you and let the children feel the heat it gives off.

Lastly, ask the children who saw the wind on the way to church this morning?

Now, that’s a hard one! You can see the rain and the sun, but you can’t see the wind. You can feel the wind and see its effect. To illustrate the wind, bring a fan with you so that the children can feel the wind and maybe hold a paper windmill in front of it to see what happens.

At Pentecost we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. However, just like the wind, you can’t see the Holy Spirit, which makes it hard. To the disciples, Jesus was like the sun, and His words were like the rain. You could see Him, hear Him and touch Him. Jesus actually said that it was better that He went away, so that the Comforter would come.

This comforter is the Holy Spirit. You can’t see or hear Him, but He wants to blow through us with His wind.

333. The Christmas show - an explanation of the build up of the whole show and the Christmas Puzzle


A Christmas show split up into twenty parts so you can do this too!

As a full-time professional Christian entertainer I do around 250 shows in churches and schools a year.  I have an hour long show that I do at Christmas. This Christmas show is made up of a few puppet acts, five different object lessons, one quiz and fourteen different magic tricks! All in one hour (or a bit more...) But why am l teling you this?

Because especially for you I have split up my Christmas show into twenty small different parts. This has taken weeks of work, because I have made an instruction video for almost every part. So now you can use these ideas within your children’s ministry. Yes, this means that you can do this Christmas show too!

With these ideas, the right magic tricks and a little bit of practice you can create a professional Christmas show of over an hour. But of course you can choose just one element or several elements and create a much shorter Christmas programme. The floor is all yours!

332. Who is welcome in the stable - part 20 of the Christmas show that you can do!


A fun final act that will make people leave with a smile on their faces

This is probably one of my favourite magic tricks. I currently use it as an ending to two of my Christian children's theatre shows. I like it because it is so easy, but it always gives a 'wow' effect. 

Take the red umbrella out of the tube. When you open the umbrella you can show that it is a normal one. You close the umbrella and put it back into the tube. Now show eight different coloured silks to the audience. Then put them into a bag, and suddenly the bag changes into the top of the umbrella and all the silks have disappeared. Pick up the tube and pull the umbrella out. Now the top has been disappeared and instead of the top, the eight silks are hanging on the umbrella.

330. Explaining the meaning of the cross - part 18 of the Christmas show that you can do!


How to use the iodine and sodium thiosulfate reaction to teach about Jesus being the Light of the world

In the video below I show you how you can end the Christmas show by explaining the meaning of the cross at the centre of the Christmas puzzle. Talk about Isaiah 9:2 "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned."

Talk about the darkness in the time that Jesus was born. The poverty, the suppression by the Romans, God's silence for more than four hundred years. You then create a darkness in a vase full of water. Then by using the Chemical Cross trick light arrives and the darkness disappears.. It is another version of the iodine and sodium thiosulfate reaction, but this time you use a cross to make the water totally clean again. 328. A celebration in the stable - part 16 of the Christmas show that you can do!


A spectacular act that is so easy to do it will surprise you!

The following act is all about the Magi arriving at the stable and giving their presents to Joseph and Mary. It is educational, fun and spectacular with some magic fire at the end of the act. And you know what? You can do this too. It is so easy...

The Magi arrived in Bethlehem and saw Jesus. They worshipped him and give him their presents. To demonstrate the giving of these three presents you use The Incredible Kettle and pour water in the first glass. Somewhere during the pouring the water turns red.

Who knows what the red present was? Incense!

Now you pour the second glass and to your surprise the water turns yellow. This yellow water is a symbol for the second present: gold!

And the third present?

Again you pour water in a glass. This time the water turns green: myrrh!

After pouring the water you lift off the lid, reach in and pull out a long (and bone dry) rainbow streamer! This streamer is a demonstration of the celebration in the stable.

To create a spectacular moment, take a piece of flash paper and light it! This will create a real flame in the air. The boys especially will love this!

You can finish this act with a dove pan and a large sponge cake.

327. Following Jesus may cost you everything - part 15 of the Christmas show that you can do!


Tell the Bible story of the three Magi and their expensive presents

You can use this trick in the Christmas magic show when you tell the story of the three wise men (the Magi) spending all their money to buy the most expensive gifts for Jesus.

Link this with the price we may have to pay for following Jesus or you can use this story to teach on worshipping God. What do we offer God when we worship Him?

Paul writes in Romans 12: 1 "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship."

The trick has a strange name: the Sucker Dice Box. You can buy it here. When you buy the trick, you get a dice.  I have covered the dice with 'gold coins' paper so that it doesn't look like a dice anymore, but like a solid block of gold coins.

324. Meet the sheep, Rocky the Raccoon and an amazing IKEA frog - part 12 of the Christmas show that you can do!


Create another act to talk about the role of shepherds within Jewish society

In the following act you can combine a few sheep hand puppets with the Rocky the spring puppet and the IKEA frog / prince puppet to talk more about the role of shepherds within the Jewish society and how special it is that God sends his angel to tell them first.

We made some of these sheep hand puppets ourselves, but you can buy beautiful sheep puppets here.

Rocky the Raccoon is very easy to bring to life, because it is a spring animal. Spring animals are puppets that consist of a large spring covered with fur. You hold the spring raccoon in one hand, moving the head with your thumb and first finger. It gives the animal a very realistic effect, and it's not uncommon for people to mistake it for a live animal!

Create a context for the shepherds by talking about their unimportance using the Useless Box

Have you ever heard of a useless box? This is a modern gadget that you can buy here or here on the internet and that is seemingly totally useless. But you can use it to talk about the unimportance, unworthiness and total uselessness of the role of the shepherds within the society that Jesus was born into.

Create a context for the shepherds by talking about their dreams using the Headless Cartoon Silks

You can use the four Headless Cartoon silks to demonstrate the dreams of the Shepherds. The four Headless Cartoon silks are not a magic trick, although we use them within Gospel Magic.  

You can make them appear from a large dove pan using flash paper.  (You can watch a demonstration video of the Headless Cartoon Silks combined with the dove pan and the flash paper here.)

315. The second piece of the Christmas Puzzle - part 3 of the Christmas show that you can do!


Use the puzzle piece of the candle to introduce the story line of Joseph and Mary 

After your own act about trusting using slush powder it is time to take the second piece of the puzzle out of the folder. It's a picture of a candle.

Put the second picture on the board; you can use the candle to talk about the dark times that the people of Israel were living in. Hundreds of years ago God had made a promise that the people walking in darkness would see a great light, but they couldn’t see anything yet. God still seemed very far away. The Romans were an occupying force that used brutal force to suppress the Israelites. There was lots of poverty. It was a dark time to be living in.

This second piece of the puzzle helps you to introduce the story of Mary’s meeting with the angel.

314. Your own act about trusting - part 2 of the Christmas show that you can do!


Any children’s worker can do an act on the theme of trust using my idea below.

I have chosen an act for you to do about trust. During my Christmas show the theme of trusting God comes back time and time again. Mary has to trust God in order to become the mother of Jesus. Joseph has to trust God and marries Mary. They both have to trust God to provide a place for them in Bethlehem. The shepherds have to trust the angel as they travel to Bethlehem. The wise men have to trust the star and the angel to bring them to Jesus and  back safely using a different route. Joseph has to trust the angel again when he decides to flee to Egypt.

312. The presentation of the Christmas Puzzle - part 1 of the Christmas show that you can do!


Any children’s or Sunday school worker can do this! You don’t have to be a professional to do this show!

You can start your Christmas show with the presentation of the Christmas Puzzle.  In total the show lasts about an hour, but of course you can make the show longer or shorter if you want. You can use a sketchboard / wooden board and velcro to stick the pieces of the puzzle onto the board.

Tell the children that the postman came to bring a parcel that didn’t fit through the post box, so he had to ring on your doorbell. You don’t know what is in the parcel. That’s exciting! Let’s have a look.

311. Jesus meets the Samaritan woman - the Sinking Orange experiment


It is at the bottom of life we must begin, and not at the top.

In John chapter 4 Jesus meets the Samaritan woman near the well. In a normal situation she would either go early in the morning or just after sunset to the well to collect her water. But she doesn’t do this. She goes in the middle of the day, when it is very hot, so that nobody will judge her or talk to her. She is a woman that lives at the bottom of life. She is broken and hurt.

To demonstrate this place a peeled orange into a big jug full of water. It will sink straight to the bottom.

When Jesus meets her He is filled with compassion for her. He offers her life to the full. He offers her living water. And the woman drinks it in. A miracle happens. The woman is filled with water and suddenly there is a healing. Jesus restores her.

To demonstrate this take the peeled orange out of the water and place an unpeeled orange in the water. This orange will float.

In John chapter 4 Jesus meets the Samaritan woman near the well. This woman was like a empty Coke can - totally empty, lying on its side, blown over by life. A woman who knows what it is to be judged by all the full Coke cans in her village. The men and women who live such nobles lives, who pour shame on this broken and emptied woman.

309. The Star of Bethlehem - a compass that points to Jesus


Pointing to Jesus can lead to a surprise - are you ready to be surprised?

In Matthew 2 we read about the Magi who follow the Star of Bethlehem. Like a giant compass in the night sky it points to Jesus. They are journeying towards their destiny: King Jesus - the One they have been searching for. After this meeting they will never be the same.

299. Candles of Christmas - a story and an object lesson


The story of the four candles

This  is the story of four candles – the candle of Peace, the candle of Trust, the candle of Love and of course the candle of Hope. You can use it in a Christmas service, in a school assembly or in your children’s ministry.

You will need four large candles and four candle holders.

Print out four cards with the words PEACE, TRUST, LOVE and HOPE on them. Make sure they are easily readable from a distance and place them in front of the four candles, or stick them around the candles. 

Before you start telling the story, light the candles.

You will also need a glass to put the LOVE candle out.

The Christmas tree - You can start with the Christmas tree and maybe tell a story about Christmas when you were young.

The Candle - The second piece of the puzzle is the candle. Now you tell the story of Mary who saw a bright light; an angel. Perhaps you can use the magic colouring book (idea 82) to tell the children that God had been silent for more 400 years. Nobody had heard anything from God. (Show the empty colouring book)

Then suddenly an angel appears with Mary and tells her an amazing thing. (Show the black / white pictures in the colouring book) What will Mary’s answer be? Mary places her trust in God and says ‘Yes’! The Christmas story can begin. (Show the coloured pictures in the book).

You can maybe use the Joker Tube (idea 85) to the adventures of Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem when trying to find a room.  (I will post a video of how you can use the Joker Tube in this story in the coming weeks.)

Christmas Puzzle 3

The Turkey - The third piece of the puzzle is the turkey. This is a symbol for the shepherds and their flock.

You ask two children to come forward and quickly dress them as shepherds. Maybe give them a hand puppet each, so that there are four shepherds. Then you hand out five or six sheep puppets. (IKEA used to sell these very cheaply). When the angels appear, the mouths of the shepherds and the sheep fall open. They hear the wonderful news and go to Bethlehem.

The Present – The fourth piece of the puzzle is the present. This is of course the story of the Magi following the star of Bethlehem and taking their gifts with them.

You can make this visual for the children with a big star of maybe even the three gifts. What are myrrh and incense?

Now the Christmas story is complete! But what's happened?

We have a giant hole in our Christmas! How is that possible? We have got a Christmas tree, nice lights, something nice to eat and presents? What is missing?

The Cross – but we have a problem! The cross doesn’t fit into the puzzle. How can we solve this?

We have  to remove the candle and the turkey puzzle piece so that we can place the cross into the middle of the Christmas Puzzle. Now you can add the other two puzzle pieces and complete the Christmas Puzzle. You can explain about the cross being a symbol for Christ, or even do a gospel presentation.

What do you see when you look at the children and the things going on in your Sunday school class?

Very often when I do a training for Christian children’s workers I show them some sums. Five of these sums are correct and one of the sums is wrong.

I then ask the children’s workers present if there is anything that they notice about these six sums. Almost always they’ll say: “One of them is incorrect.”

This is a way of looking at life that we notice the things that go wrong.

Another way of looking at these sums is to say: “Five of them are correct.”

263. You shall be holy, for I am holy - starting a conversation within your Sunday school class or youth group about God’s call to holiness


The importance of talking with 21st century children about what it means to live a holy life

Not only in the Old Testament, but just as much in the New Testament we are called upon to be a holy people, for our God is a holy God. Holiness is such an important theme in the Scriptures, that we come across time and time again. Just look at some of the Bible verses in the scripture reference in this idea.

How do we teach the importance of holiness when so much of its value has been lost in our current society?

Why is it so important that we teach children in the 21st century to be holy, as our God is holy? And how do we show this to the children in our Sunday school class, children’s ministry or the teenagers in our youth group, when the word ‘holiness’ has lost so much of its value in our current society. How do we stop God’s call to holiness becoming something in the eyes of children and teenagers that isn’t:  “Obeying a few strict laws from a ‘mean’ God till you’re old enough to make your own decisions and live your own life?”

Talking with children about what it means to live a holy life

The difficulties of growing up in a culture of no absolute right or wrong

How do we teach a generation that is growing up in a culture of no absolute wrong or right the importance of living a holy life? And what does it mean to live like that?

Preaching at them is easier, but starting a conversation is better

Maybe the following object lesson / cool science experiment will help you to get this conversation going with the children and teenagers. With our youth constantly being bombarded with messages opposite to the ones we find in Scripture, we run the risk of our Christian message getting lost inbetween all the other messages. We need to start a conversation with children and teenagers about these themes. Of course it is much easier to preach at children and teenagers than to start a conversation, but unless we start and continue this conversation we will not reach them with these important truths.

Not every Bible story is easy to tell. Especially when you have to tell the story to children in your Sunday school class or within your children’s ministry.

As a storyteller for children I have struggled in the past with the re-telling of several Bible stories in which the Israelites had to do certain ‘cruel’ things in the name of God. How can we tell these Bible stories in a time of religious tolerance?

255. The heart of ice - a demonstration of God's love in your Sunday school lesson or family service


Demonstrating the love of God through a melting heart of ice

How can we demonstrate the power of Gods love to our children in the church or within our family? How can we make something so beyond our understanding visual and tactile during a Sunday school lesson or as visual aid during a sermon? God's love is so amazing. Can we help our children and teenagers to experience a little bit of it?

It is very easy to do. You take a large silicone heart mould, fill it with chicken wire, add water and leave it in the freezer for 48 hours. After two days you take it out of the freezer and you got yourself an heart of ice.  You attach a wire to it, hang it from the ceiling and place a container underneath. 

During a Sunday school lesson, a sermon or during family meeting at home a you create a moment of silence. Hopefully the only thing you'll hear is the water dripping down from the heart of ice into the container.

This melting heart of ice is a brilliantly simple illustration to show that God’s love can melt the hardest of hearts. His love can break through to the hardest hearts. And God's tears are like the drops of water  that flow from this heart. 

Use it as a creative prayer opportunity

It is important not only to show this melting heart of ice, but also to give everyone the opportunity to feel this melting heart for themselves. We all know someone who is in great need of God's love. As you touch this melting heart of ice and as you feel the drops of water you can pray for this person. Maybe it is you. Then you can pray for yourself or ask someone else to pray for you.

I use this trick in one of my Christmas magic shows, when I tell the story of the three wise men (the  Magi) spending all their money to buy the most expensive gifts for Jesus.

You can link this with the price we may have to pay for following Jesus or you can use this story to teach on worshipping God. What do we offer God when we worship Him?

How to use this Gospel Magic trick to tell the story of the prodigal son

In idea 251. Zacchaeus finds real treasure I explain the routine of the Magic Dice Box. I use it in one of my children's programmes, when I do an hour long show on the theme of the prodigal son. The block of gold coins represents all the money he made from selling one third of everything on his father's farm. He takes this money with him to the big city and spends it all very quickly. 251. Zacchaeus finds real treasure - the Dice Box


Tell the Bible story of Zacchaeus the tax collector in a new way

Show everyone a solid block of gold coins (this is a large dice that I covered with paper gold coins on it), and a box with two compartments, and doors to each compartment. The solid block of gold coins is placed in one compartment, and the doors are closed. The box is tilted, and your audience hear the block of gold coins slide from one side to the other. So they are not impressed when you open the door to show that the gold has vanished. They ask you to open the other door. 

You tilt the box again and open the door. They hear the block again, and even those that missed it the first time are now convinced they have caught you out. Repeat a few more times, milking it for all it's worth.

Finally open both doors, to show that the block of gold coins has indeed vanished.

Telling the Bible story of the parable of the lost son to children

Day in, day out... It never seems to stop. As the prodigal son is working on his father's farm he is dreaming about the big city with all its enticing things. Who wants to know what the prodigal son is dreaming about? Ask four volunteers to come forward. Each of them chooses a colour: green, yellow, red or blue. According to the colour they choose you give them a headless silk in that colour. Together they demonstrate the prodigal son's dreams. (Luke 15:11-32)

198. The Energy Stick - a must have for any children’s worker, youth worker or pastor


Probably one of the best object lessons of all time

We think that this toy is maybe one of the best object lessons of all time. You can buy it for a few dollars or pounds on Amazon.com or on Amazon.co.uk

It works very simply.

Invite a few children to come forward. Ask them to stand in a circle and hold hands. Take the energy stick in your right hand and take the hand of the child on your left. Leave the circle 'open' by not taking the hand of the child on your right. Then ask the child on your right to also take hold of the other end (the silver end) of the energy stick. When they do this, something amazing happens. Lights go on and you hear a funny noise. What's happening?

There is a small current that you don’t feel and that you can’t see. This current flows through the whole circle as long as everyone is holding hands. It connects through the circle of hands to the other side of the energy stick and then the electrical circuit is complete.
