Eli was a high priest in Silo, with whom Samuel grew up. Eli had two sons who abused their priesthood. We first encounter Eli in the Bible when he gets angry with the grieving Hanna because he thinks she is drunk. Eli was judge over Israel for forty years, and died when he heard about the death of his sons on the battlefield.
