389. The wedding at Cana - a wonderful Bible story

Do what Jesus says

Have any of you ever been to a wedding?  We have a special service, and then a party with lots of good food, and we all wear our best clothes, don't we?  Our weddings only go on for a few hours, but in Jesus' time they went on for several DAYS.....!  People would bring food and drink, or they would give the young couple some money to help them set up home.

At this wedding, there was a special guest - who do you think it was?  JESUS.  He arrived at the party with all his friends, and they all had a wonderful time - the men would be eating in one room, the women in another (paint a group dancing) , and the servants would be out at the back organising the food and drink.  Here is the Steward of the Feast, the man in charge of serving out the food and drink.   Jesus' mother was there too. She heard a lot of worried talk going on in the kitchen.  The servants told her the wine was running out.  This was AWFUL news, The wedding feast would have to be called off halfway through - it was terrible.

377. The Bible story of the Vineyard Workers

God's goodness and grace is not fair!

Do you play team games sometimes?  Have you ever really wanted to be on a particular team?  It was a bit like that in the market place in towns in Jesus day..... not for playing games, but being chosen by a Landowner to work for him for the day.  The men wanting work were probably not Jews, but Arabs.  They were not considered worth much.  They were known as  "fellaheen", or "sand dwellers" because they lived in tents out in the desert, earning a living as best they could.

If you wanted to be rude to someone you would call him a "sand dweller".   If they didn't get work, they had no money for the family to buy food.  The least you could live on was one denarius.  It wasn't much but you could at least buy bread.  There was no Social Security system then - it was work or nothing.  So here we have a story about a man who owned a vineyard.  What's a vineyard?  Where grapes are grown, on vines.  He must have been very keen to get workers to pick his grapes, as he was down at the market at dawn - and he went himself, he didn't just send his manager.  You have to pick grapes just when they are ripe so the job has to be done quickly.  It's the same today.

He looked at the men.  "You look nice and strong. (indicate  a child)  "Will you work for me today for a denarius?"  (Ask children in the front row)  "YES, Sir, we will!"

376. The Bible story of the ten leprosy suffers healed by Jesus

An easy sketchboard / Bible story that you can use in your chilren's ministry

In this town here, there were ten people suffering from leprosy.  Let's draw them in. (Invite them to count them as you draw them).   They were lonely and sad.    One day they heard that somebody special was coming to town.  Who do you think it was?  YES!  It was JESUS   (Complete the name) Jesus was coming!  Why were they excited?  How would they know about him?  There wasn't any T.V. or radio - perhaps the villagers shouted the news.  Here comes Jesus out of the town, with his friends (paint them in).  The ten sick people called out "HELP US!  HELP US!  PLEASE, HELP US!"  Jesus didn't run away.  He didn't say "Get away from me you filthy people!"  The Bible tells us that Jesus has time for every one of us.  Jesus cares.  (Complete the word).

364. Tell any Bible story about Jesus restoring people with the use of a balancing Soda Can

The only object lesson you can do all over the world.

Really excited about this object lesson! Did you know you can use a balancing Soda Can to tell any Bible story about Jesus healing and restoring people? And the great thing is that you can find a Soda Can all over the world. Wherever you are, you can do this object lesson!

The only object lesson you can do all over the world

Just think about the four friends and the paralysed man or about Bartimaeus, the blind beggar.
But also about the story of Zacchaeus and the raising of Lazarus...

In the video below I demonstrate how you can use the balancing Soda Can to tell the Bible story in John 4 of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman near the well. This woman was like a empty Soda Can - totally empty, lying on its side, blown over by life. A woman who knows what it is to be judged by all the full Coke Cans in her village. The men and women who live such nobles lives and who pour their shame on this broken and emptied woman.

But then something amazing happens. Jesus offers her life to the full. He offers her Living Water. And this woman drinks it all. A miracle happens. She is filled with Living Water and suddenly there is a restored balance in her life.

Watch this amazing cool science experiment and object lesson in the video below...

362. Tell the Bible story of Ruth and Naomi

Three funerals and a wedding - a sketchboard story about Ruth

But - one day there was bad news:  Elimelech got very sick and died. How do you think they would have felt?  Yes, very sad.  Very, very sad.  Not long after, Mahlon and Chilion died too!  How awful!  Poor Naomi.  Poor Orpah.  Poor Ruth.  Soon they didn't have much money left.  They wouldn't be able to buy enough food to eat.  They wouldn't have enough to live on.  Naomi was a very sensible old lady.  She said to the girls "My dears, we are in a bad way.  I am not able to look after you any more.  I think the best thing to do would be for you each to go back home to your own family, who can look after you, and I will make my way back to Bethlehem and see if anyone there will help me..."

Bible story of Ruth and Naomi, sketchboard painting, sketchboard story

Orpah and Ruth looked at one another.  How could they desert this kind old lady?  In the end Orpah decided she would go home..... but Ruth said “Don't even ask me to leave you.  Wherever you go, I will go.  Your people will be my people.  Your God will be my God.  Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried.  Nothing but death can separate us. I will go with you and look after you always".

David never knew his father, and was brought up with other brothers and sisters by his mother on little smallholding about 40 miles from Kampala, Uganda. When he was about 9 years old (he isn't quite sure of his age) his mother and siblings all died of a virulent form of malaria in the space of one week. The villagers helped him to bury them on the land near the house, but none of them could take him in as they already had too many mouths to feed. Remembering his school had taught him "Trust Jesus"; he decided to walk to Kampala to find some means of surviving. Several days later he reached this sprawling filthy city, and soon met other street kids: they showed him the best places to sleep and hide, and a source of good food - the skip at the back of the Sheraton Hotel where the wealthy tourists stay!

The story of Romans 8.1

They heard that Idi Amin's soldiers were rounding up street children to take them to work on his sugar plantations, virtually as slave labour. David did not want to be rounded up. Christian-run businesses in Uganda usually advertise the fact and he liked cars, so he knocked on the door of "THE JESUS GARAGE" and a very large man came out, surprised to see the little lad there. David remembers standing on tiptoe to try and look big, and asking him for a job. Taking pity on him, the man said he could be the sweeper up, and gave him an old car to sleep in - his first home for a long time!

360. Jesus tells the parable of the Lost Son

I thought you were DEAD, and here you are, ALIVE!

Once upon a time there was a young man.  He lived with his father and elder brother in one of these: (draw a door, roof and chimney on the 4). What is it?  A house!  But it wasn't an ordinary house.  It was a farm house.  His father had a big farm, with lots of people working for him, and he was very rich.  The young man knew that one day, when his father died, he would inherit a lot of money from the farm, but he didn't want to wait.  Do you like waiting for things?  He was bored with working on the farm.  He was  fed up.  He was the sort of person who said "I want what I want, and I want it NOW".  He was very selfish.  So one day he went to his father and said (Whine) "Dad....... DAAD!"  "Yes, son?"  " You know when I'm older I'll inherit a lot of money from the farm - well, can I have it NOW,  please?

The prodigal son

I'm young!  I want to get out and see the world!  I want to go places and do things and have a good time, NOW, while I'm young enough to enjoy myself, not when I'm older.........  please?"  And his Dad thought about it and he said "Yes, you can have your share now, if that's what you want." In fact that was an APPALLING thing to ask, because really, the young man was saying "I wish you were dead.  I want your money more than you."  What do you think of that?  But however hurt the Dad's feelings were, he arranged things so the younger son could have his share of the farm.  He must have sold it very quickly, and had to leave town fast, for the villagers would have been extremely angry with him. (Luke 15)

359. A Narnia story about Aslan defeating the White Witch

Aslan is not safe! He is a lion. But he is GOOD!

Mr. & Mrs. Beaver told the children all about this person here (remove the Lamp post card, and reveal the lion)  Who was it? ASLAN.

The children asked “Is he safe?” “No of course he's not safe – he's a lion!  But he is GOOD.” Then as they began to make their escape, something amazing began to happen – what was it?  SPRING had started to arrive. “ASLAN is on the move!” called the animals. Eventually, he rescued Edmund – but the White Witch recalled a law which meant she had the right to take his life. Aslan had to talk to her alone.

Narnia

Lucy and Susan saw him walking sad and lonely away from the camp, and went with him. He let them hold him, and keep him company. Then he made them hide. They couldn't believe their eyes when they saw him allow himself to be bound and shorn and laid on the stone table, and they couldn't bear to look as the White Witch raised her dagger....  she killed him. Lucy and Susan were desperately sad.  Then they saw the little mice begin to nibble away the ropes. Sadly they began to walk away – and there was a terrific CRACK – they looked back – and what had happened?

Yes! Aslan had come alive!  He was there, strong and well and his mane had grown again – the stone table had cracked in two - and they were full of joy! The White Witch was beaten – there was a deeper law.

358. Jesus tells the parable of the Lost Coin

Jesus talks about God's heart for the lost

Jesus told lots of stories about being lost - lost people and lost things - he wanted to tell us how much God loves us, and wants us to be part of his family – The Bible tells us that God doesn't want anybody to be "lost".

Lost coin

Do you think everybody was happy to hear Jesus talk like this?  Well, do you know what?  some of them, the very important people, were not AT ALL happy.  They said to themselves "Jesus does all the wrong things and he spends time with all the wrong people, and he even EATS with them...."  having a meal with someone meant you thought they were good people, especially if you were a Rabbi, a special teacher, like Jesus.  These people got very angry with Jesus and couldn't understand him at all.  So this is why he told these stories about things that got lost - three in a row in Luke 15 so you can see he really wanted to explain it to them.  (Luke 15)

357. A midnight feast - Jesus tells a parable about praying

Ask... Seek... Knock...  The parable of the friend at midnight

Here's a picture of a family in bed.  They have packed everything away and unrolled their sleeping mats.  They have taken off their belts and their shoes, wrapped themselves up in their cloaks, and gone to sleep.  Here is the Dad, the Mum, the baby, the son and the daughter (paint the beard, hair, and sleeping eyes on each as you name them).  They are all fast asleep.  It's the middle of the night.

Suddenly KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK !  HELLOOO!(Knock on table or stamp on floor to make a loud noise).  They all woke up! (paint on their eyes open, and a wide open mouth for the baby).  The baby opened his mouth as well as his eyes (YELL!).  The Dad called out: "Who on earth is that at this time of night?"  It was the neighbour (fill in his face).  "Its only me.  I'm sorry to disturb you, but my friend has just arrived and I haven't any food to give him, please could you lend me 3 loaves just till the morning when my wife does the baking?'.   "NO I CAN'T.  I'm in bed with all the family.  GO AWAY!"

Midnight feast

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.  "But PLEASE!  I can't make him to to bed hungry!  He's come such a long way and he's STARVING!"  "NO, GO AWAY!".  KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.  "I'm sorry but I am not going to go away until you give me some bread for my friend."  "Oh, all right then, I suppose I MUST."

So the Dad got up, and made the family all move over so he could get to the cupboard and take out the bread, and then he had to go down the step (UGH, WHAT HAVE I PUT MY FOOT IN?") and un-bar the door, and give the neighbour the bread......."    Then everybody was smiling (paint smiles) - the neighbour and the friend had the food they needed, and all the family could get back to sleep.

Jesus told his friends this story when they asked him "How should we talk to God".  You see, in the old days, they thought of God as very fearsome and grand and far off - but Jesus told them to talk to him just like their Father - the very best kind of Dad you could imagine. (If time, could ask for suggestions as to the best kind of Dad.) He said that the Dad in the story ended up giving the neighbour what he asked for just because he kept on nagging, but God isn't like that - he LOVES to give good things to his children - that's US!.  Jesus said if you ask your Dad for something nice to eat, would he give you poison?  NO!  Jesus said if human Dads know how to give good things to their kids, how much more will our heavenly Father give good things to us when we ask him." (Luke 11: 5-8)

356. The healing of the Maniac at Gadara

Jesus speaks words of tremendous power and authority

Who likes picnics?  What's your favourite place for a picnic?  By a lake?  On a mountain?  In the park?  In Bible times, when Jesus was walking in Palestine, people liked to go out on a Saturday for games and a picnic – to the GRAVEYARD!   It was like a little town with a wall round the edge: lots of little stone houses with columns at the front like the one in my picture.  People used to believe that the spirits of their ancestors would be pleased to see them, and at the end of the day they used to leave food inside the family tomb, and wine, for the spirits to enjoy.  These were pagan people living on the east bank of the river Jordan – where there were ten Greek cities called the Decapolis.

Maniac at Gadara

There was a wild man living there.  He lived on the food and wine that was left in the family tombs.  He used to rush around at night, shrieking.  He had no friends.  He was “ALONE” (paint it up).  Nobody could help him.  They had even tried tying him up and putting him in prison in chains so that people could go out in the fields again without danger, but the badness in him was so great it made him strong like Superman, and he smashed his way out of the chains and out of the jail.  He shouted at them when they were at the graveyard having their picnics.  They could see his MAD eyes staring at them.  (draw mad eyes peering round the tomb).  They were terrified of him.  Nobody could  help him.  He was “LOST” (paint it up). (Mark 5:1-20, Luke 8:26-39, Matthew 8:28-34)

339. If you remain in me, you will bear much fruit

Using a Grass Head to teach on remaining in Jesus

In John 15:5 Jesus says: "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

If you remain in me and I in you you will bear much fruit

In this object lesson you can use a Grass Head to teach on this verse.

Show the children two Grass Heads. One has its rope in a small vase of water and is nice and green. The rope of the other grass head is not in contact with the water.
What has happened to the grass on its head?  If you remain as a Grass Head in the water your grass will grow. In you don't remain in the water you'll dry up and wither away.

338. All the hairs on your head are numbered

Using a Grass Head to count the hairs on our head

In Matthew 10: 29 - 31 and in Luke 12: 6-7 Jesus talks about the hairs on our head being numbered by God: "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.…"

Hears are numbered

337. Teach children about baptism through the use of a Grass Head

What is the connection between a Grass Head and a baptism?

That's a good question! In some churches children are baptised when they are infants. In other churches youngsters and adults are baptisted by immersion as a sign of their faith. You can use this idea for both kinds of baptism services.

Explain the meaning of baptism

In this object lesson it all comes down to immersing a Grass Head into a big jug of water. Once you have done this for a few minutes and you place the Grass Head on top of a small vase of water in a few weeks time grass will grow on its head.

Explain the meaning of baptism in the case of an infant baptism service

In the case of an infant baptism you talk about the child being immersed in God's love and in God's family. To demonstrate this you immerse the Grass Head in a jug of water. Then you show a Grass Head that started growing four weeks ago and which now has lots of grass on its head. Talk about being part of God's family and growing up in God's family. Being part of God's love and growing into knowing and demonstrating God's love.

Explain the meaning of baptism in the case of an adult baptism service

In the case of an adult baptism you talk about this person laying down his/her old life and coming up from the water to demonstrate the new life in Christ. To demonstrate this you immerse the Grass Head in a jug of water. Then you show a Grass Head that started growing four weeks ago and which now has lots of grass on its head. Talk about how today is just the beginning. Baptism is not the end of spiritual growth. It is the beginning of God doing a new work in the life of the person that is being baptised. As a demonstration of this new life you can show the Grass Head with lots of grass!

336. How can we teach the power of prayer in our kids ministry?

Teaching children the power of prayer through the use of a Grass Head

As a child I struggled with sitting still during long prayers in church. When the adults finished their prayer with the word 'amen', I sighed a silent sigh of relief.

For lots of children 'amen' means: this is the end of the boring bit. Now we can get on with the fun stuff again!

Isn't it a shame that talking with an almighty and loving Father who listens and answers our prayers, has become something that is boring? How can we teach children within our Sunday school lesson or kids ministry the power of prayer in a fresh and visual way?

teaching power of prayer with a grass head, a Grass Head, power of prayer

In the video below I will demonstrate how any children's pastor or children's worker can use a Grass Head to teach the children in your Sunday school lesson or during a children's moment in the service the power of prayer and the meaning of the word 'amen'. All you need is a Grass Head and some patience. If you don't have the patience, you can use two Grass Heads like I do in the video.

289. The Puzzle of Christmas - make your Christmas service unforgettable

A new way to tell the Christmas story

Are you looking for something visual to tell the Christmas story and maybe explain the gospel? Maybe you can use the (giant) Christmas Puzzle...

Christmas Puzzle 1

The Christmas tree - You can start with the Christmas tree and maybe tell a story about Christmas when you were young.

Christmas Puzzle 32

The Candle - The second piece of the puzzle is the candle. Now you tell the story of Mary who saw a bright light; an angel. Perhaps you can use the magic colouring book (idea 82) to tell the children that God had been silent for more 400 years. Nobody had heard anything from God. (Show the empty colouring book)

Then suddenly an angel appears with Mary and tells her an amazing thing. (Show the black / white pictures in the colouring book) What will Mary’s answer be? Mary places her trust in God and says ‘Yes’! The Christmas story can begin. (Show the coloured pictures in the book).

You can maybe use the Joker Tube (idea 85) to the adventures of Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem when trying to find a room.  (I will post a video of how you can use the Joker Tube in this story in the coming weeks.)

Christmas Puzzle 3

The Turkey - The third piece of the puzzle is the turkey. This is a symbol for the shepherds and their flock.

You ask two children to come forward and quickly dress them as shepherds. Maybe give them a hand puppet each, so that there are four shepherds. Then you hand out five or six sheep puppets. (IKEA used to sell these very cheaply). When the angels appear, the mouths of the shepherds and the sheep fall open. They hear the wonderful news and go to Bethlehem.

Christmas Puzzle 4

The Present – The fourth piece of the puzzle is the present. This is of course the story of the Magi following the star of Bethlehem and taking their gifts with them.

You can make this visual for the children with a big star of maybe even the three gifts. What are myrrh and incense?

Now the Christmas story is complete! But what's happened?

We have a giant hole in our Christmas! How is that possible? We have got a Christmas tree, nice lights, something nice to eat and presents? What is missing?

Produce the last piece of the Christmas Puzzle...

Christmas Puzzle 5

The Cross – but we have a problem! The cross doesn’t fit into the puzzle. How can we solve this?

We have  to remove the candle and the turkey puzzle piece so that we can place the cross into the middle of the Christmas Puzzle. Now you can add the other two puzzle pieces and complete the Christmas Puzzle. You can explain about the cross being a symbol for Christ, or even do a gospel presentation.

Christmas Puzzle 6

When we place Jesus – the meaning of the Christmas story in the centre of Christmas, the puzzle is complete

270. The parable of the wise man and the foolish man - a sketchboard story

Tell this story of the wise and foolish builders in a school assembly, a children’s program or in a preach

"What a wet winter it has been. Three months of solid rain.  How lovely to see the sun again. I used to live by the sea!  We looked forward so much to the sunshine. It was great fun, we used to go down to the beach every day after school in the summertime. My sister and I used to build sand castles - do you like doing that? Our Dad helped us, we would put big pebbles in the walls and try to keep the sea out as the tide came in - do you think we managed it?  We did for a little while, but in the end the waves would come over the top and the sand would wash out, and then what would happen? Yes, the castle would collapse and be flattened by the sea."

The parable of the wise and foolish builders

"Here's a story told by someone very special. Let's put his name up on the board: JESUS. He had been teaching the crowds of people about how God would like us to live, how to take care of one another, how to be kind AND sensible, and how much God loves us. To help them understand, he told them this story about two men.  It's called a parable – a story with a hidden meaning."

"Each of the men wanted to build a house. What's the first thing you have to do when you start building a house?  (Ask for answers - make a plan, find the site, dig the foundations etc.). One man had a lot of hard work to do.  He dug down deep to good solid rock, and then he built the foundations, and then he built up the walls, until he had a good, strong, solid house. Here it is (Paint it in on the hill top) It takes a long time to do a job properly, doesn't it? My mum's favourite proverb was “If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well.” (fill it in, if using this bit) I expect he sat on the roof to admire the view."  (Matthew 7:24-27)
