Daily Tip - Children's ministry: Five common mistakes

Everyday tip for your Sunday school lesson or children’s ministry

animation

These mistakes are easily made within in our children's ministry

In relation to children's work we often make a number of mistakes in the church or congregation:

1) Sunday school is there to keep the children busy, while the adults get the real food from the Lord.
2) Let's tell the children as many biblical stories as possible. They will learn the rest later in the church.
3) Children's work is a good training period for people, before they start the real work in the church.
4) Everyone can / is allowed to do children's work.
5) A child worker does not really need a thorough training.

These are serious mistakes. Why do we get all kinds of problems with our teenagers later on and do the youth leave the church in large numbers? Is there a piece of the root in the children's work of the church?

Daily Tip - Children's ministry: It is all about communication

Everyday tip for your Sunday school lesson or children’s ministry

animation

Children's ministry is all about communication

The most important word in children's work is communication. There are three factors in communication:

1. The bringer
2. The receiver
3. The means by which the bearer communicates

These three factors always go hand in hand. These three factors are also reflected in children's work. First of all, there is the child worker. This is the one who tries to communicate something to the children. The children are the recipients. They are the ones to whom you try to make something clear. The means you use for this can be anything.

So the child worker, the bringer, tries to make something clear to the children, the recipient, by means of a programme. I think that as child workers we all know that this does not always work. It is then important to look at which of the three factors it could be. Is it just me? Is it because of the children? Or is it perhaps because of my programme?

How else could I do it to get the desired result? Do I need to change my attitude? Do I understand the children I work with? Is my programme tailored to their level and age group? Can I add new ingredients to my programme in order to be able to communicate well?

Crafts idea - Zacchaeus: 'Build a marshmallow tree'

A tree of marshmallows?

Zacchaeus wants to see Jesus and climbs a tree. But what if there was no tree? Could we have built a tree for Zacchaeus with marshmallows?

This idea is part of a complete Sunday school lesson on the Bible story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10.

This idea will help the children in your Sunday school lesson, youth ministry, Bible lesson, VBS, kidmin, children’s church or children’s ministry to reflect on this powerful Bible passage.

Daily Tip - Children's ministry: Small groups 2

The purpose of the small groups is to:

1) Get to know each other better.
The leaders have already thought of a number of questions in advance. The first questions can be about fun things, like:
- What is your favourite hobby?
- Which food do you like best?

2) Talking to each other about the theme or the learning points.
By means of questions you can find out if the children have understood and you can talk about it further.

3) Praying with each other and for each other.
During such a discussion group it is nice to ask if there are things for which we can pray or thank. After this you can pray and thank for it together with the children. It is good to stimulate the children in these groups to pray as well.

Daily Tip - Children's ministry: Small groups 1

Everyday tip for your Sunday school lesson or children’s ministry

animation

During a children's programme it is nice to divide the children into small groups at a certain point in time. One of the better ways to do this is, if you have a large room, to let the children lie on their stomachs with their heads towards each other. This has three advantages:

1) Everyone can look at each other
2) Because they lie on their arms, they cannot pull or hit each other.
3) They cannot kick each other.

Game - Zacchaeus: 'The Night Watchman'

A fun Bible game about the Bible story of Zacchaeus

Jesus sees Zacchaeus sitting up there in the tree. Can the Night Watchman find the children?

This idea is part of a complete Sunday school lesson on the Bible story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10.

What do you need:

- a darkened room

What do you do:

Do:
This game is played in the dark... Choose one child to go and stand in the corridor. All the other children are given a number. Then then hide themselves in the dark room and the night watchman comes in.

He or she then says: "The night watchman is coming and the clock strikes (a number) o’clock.

The person who has that number makes the sound of an animal. The night watchman has to try and find the person and guess who it is.

Daily Tip - Creation: 12. The first time

# Object lesson on creation

Bible verse:

Genesis 1: 5 “God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day." - NIV

The first time

God just made the first day. For the first time...
Countless days will follow. But this was the first day.

When something is for the first time, it always feels extra special. For example: your first day at school or in the new class. Your first day in your sports team, your first day in camp.

Question: Who wants to say something about their first day?

To help children, you can let them sit in a circle and give one of the children an object in their hands. The person with the object has to tell something about his or her first day.

After this, this person can walk to someone else in the circle and give him or her this object and then this child can tell something about their first day.

Daily Tip - Creation: 11. Opposites

# Object lesson on creation

Bible verse:

Genesis 1: 5 “God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day." - NIV

Opposites

At the very beginning of the Bible - in the fifth verse of chapter 1 of Genesis you come across the first contradiction.

Q: Who knows what an opposition is?

God calls light 'Day' and dark He calls 'Night'. Day and Night are opposites. The first opposites in the Bible.

Question: How many opposites can we think of together?

Game - Zacchaeus: 'Take off those socks...'

A fun Bible game about the Bible story of Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus exploited the people in Jericho. As a tax collector he went for the money and not for their well-being. If he had to, he would have someone undress up to his shirt.

What do you do:

Tell:
Zacchaeus exploited the people in Jericho. As a tax collector he went for the money and not for their welfare. If he had to, he would have taken the shirt off their backs.

Do:
Ask everyone to take off their shoes, and pull their socks half off. The aim of the game is to try and get the socks off each other's feet by standing on them loose socks. The last one with at least one socks wins.

Check if this game fits your group. Make sure that children don’t tread on each other's feet. They are not allowed to touch each other with their hands.

Daily Tip - Creation: 10. The first name

animation

# Object lesson on creation

Bible verse:

Genesis 1: 5 “God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day." - NIV

The first name

Imagine if we had a world without names. What would your mother and father call you? What about the friends you play with? Do you get a number or do the others say, "Hey, you there!"

Our name is so important. It makes us who we are. Just feel how strange it is when you suddenly have a different name.

Let the children sit in a circle. Give each child the name of a child sitting to the left of him or her.

Have the child sitting to his or her right ask a question with this name in it. For example, "What's your favorite food, Robert?" And so go through the circle.

It's weird to suddenly get the name of your neighbour and discover that your other neighbour now has your name.

Names are very important. And the first name is given by... God.

And do you know who gets the first name?

Light! Light gets its first name from God. God gives light the name 'Day'

Daily Tip - Creation: 09. Light from darkness

Everyday tip for your Sunday school lesson or children’s ministry

animation

# Object lesson on creation

Bible verse:

Genesis 1: 4 “God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." - NIV

God is into seperating

First God is going to make something. Now He is going to separate something. He pushes the light and the darkness apart, as it were. One becomes two.

In the game we are going to play now, we are also going to separate. No light of darkness, but we are going to separate the group every time.

Hang the word 'yes' on one side of the wall in a room and the word 'no' on the other side.

Let the children stand close together in the middle.

Ask the children a question. If the answer is 'yes', they should run to the wall of the 'yes'. If the answer is 'no', they must run to the other wall.

Ask questions like:
- Are you a boy?
- Are you older than so many years?
- Do you like broccoli?

I think you can think of a lot more and a lot more fun questions yourself. Good luck!
